About Sumner SLSC Surf Sports

Over each summer season there are a large number of carnivals and events that provide the opportunity to race, compete and have fun. These provide a great atmosphere and promote good sportsmanship, in racing against friends fellow life guards from all over Canterbury.

There are three age groups, Under 16, Under 19, and Open. In each age group the events differ slightly, however in doing this it provides a great progression up to the Open events.

Regional carnivals are a good launch pad for some of our talented and serious athletes who go on to represent Sumner and Canterbury at National events. We have currently a number of Regional and National representatives who also help out with some of the coaching programme. We have had members in the  two New Zealand teams to place second in the 2004 and 2006 World Surf Life Saving Championships and a member in the current NZ Youth team.

Sumner SLSC provides training in Ski, Board, Swim, and Beach events. We have a set training programme each season, and welcome any new comers. In addition to this, a lot of our athletes are also part of a swim squad, or go out and do their own additional training. We also endeavour to bring in elite coaches twice a season to give our athletes an opportunity to further develop their skills and build up their repertoire of drills and sessions.

The Sumner SLSC has a strong tradition in Inflatable Rescue Boats (IRB’s). SSLSC has won a number of national titles in IRB racing, and continue to hold their own in both Regional and National competitions. We have a great group of keen IRB enthusiasts at the club currently who are more than willing to encourage any new or interested people into the exciting side of IRB racing.

Training is run through the IRB sector of the club, as well as taking part in Regional training sessions.
